In the spring of 2011 Freedom's Wings and Soldier On entered into a strategic alliance to provide Canadian Forces personnel with permanent illness or injury the opportunity to experience the joy of free silent flight in a glider with adaptive hand controls.
The national launch coincided with the July 1st 2011 Canada Day Festivities at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa and le Club de vol à voile du Québec. Unfortunately launch day activities were rained out in Edmonton Alberta.
For the balance of the 2011 soaring season Freedom's Wings will work together with Soldier On to provide Inspirational Flights for injured and disabled military personnel.
As the program grows and additional sponsorship money becomes available flight training with the use of hand controls will be made available to qualified personnel
One of Freedom's Wings core fund raising initiatives is to make available funds for flight training of injured service personnel returning from Afghanistan.
Soldier On was co-founded in 2006 by WO Andrew McLean, a Canadian Forces Search and Rescue Technician and ultra-marathon runner, and Greg Lagacé, Paralympic Development Manager with the Canadian Paralympic Committee.
